Day 11 - Malaysia (29 July 2019)

After the best night’s sleep since this trip started, I realized I could quickly get used to how the other half lives.  We started out the morning at a pretty leisurely pace. Melissa and I were roommates, and we woke up to tweeting birds and a beautifully calm sunrise.

After breakfast, some of us went down to see what the beach looked like in the daylight and to see the pool!  It was amazing how low the tide was.  If you looked closely, you could see tiny crabs skirting across the mud from the low tide.

It is a really pretty resort, with golf carts that transport people, as well as bikes.  I also love that the resort is in the shape of a palm tree!

After our morning adventure, we spent the rest of the morning in the infinity pool. It. Was. Glorious.

I went back to take a shower, but the maintenance guys were replacing the heating unit in our shower, so I used the other one in our suite before a quick lunch and then got on a bus for a village tour.

It was an enlightening experience to see some of the ways they live and work here. The tour began with a tea reception.

We started with a visit to a traditional home in the area. It had been added on a few times, and I learned that extended families also live together.  They like bright colors in their houses.  I can totally get behind that idea.

We visited a bamboo forest, where I learned that king cobras hang out in the branches...but don’t worry. We didn’t go at night, so we were fine. 😳

I also saw dragon fruit fields for the first time, a beehive, learned about palm kernel oil and how palm trees are friendly, as they allow ferns to grow on them. Coconut trees do not.

We learned about the labor intensive process to make coffee and saw how they access rubber from rubber trees.

We continued on to a factory where they make agro chips. It was pretty humbling for me to watch the hand-made process.

They have a store next door, and we were able to explore it after removing our shoes.

I learned a lot about Malaysia during the tour.  The country has 9 Kong’s that they rotate through. Each king/queen serve for 4-5 years. They also have a prime minister. The average wage for the workers is 1,100 Ringgits per month (divide by 4 for USD). Houses close about 400 Ringgits per month too.

After reloading on the bus, they fed us a delicious meal at the place where we took our tea, and then we headed back to the resort.

I changed back into my swimsuit and went back to the pool for a bit. There is just something about being in cool water while the heat and humidity are turned up to full blast.

The pool closed at 19:00, so we waited near the pool for the sunset. There’s something calming about the golden hour and then watching the sun sink below the horizon.

We walked around the resort for a few minutes before making our way back to dinner. Mine was an ice cold smoothie!

I was grateful for the calm of the resort to help me recharge. I was appreciative of Malaysia. I loved all of the colors and abundant nature they have as far as the eye can see. This trip has been fantastic!
