Scotland Day 12 (26 June 2018)

After loading our bags into the car, we went down for breakfast. I ordered the eggs Florentine. It is always interesting how different countries interpret the same dish. One thing is for sure, Popeye would’ve been proud!

We left Inverness and started driving south. I did not realize that the Loch Ness is 23 miles long!  It is also over a mile wide. They claim that three times the  population of the whole earth can fit in it. At any rate, it was beautiful in the sunshine!  The dark color of the water comes from peat moss.

We then drove about a half hour to Urquhart Castle. Due to its position right on Loch Ness, they intentially blew up parts of it so I wouldn’t be used again. It was a beautiful setting nestled up against the Loch Ness.

Be impressed people!  Not only did they have a trebuchet outside the walls, they also had a latrine on the inside!

We walked all over the area of the castle. It must have been huge in its heyday!

We found the water gate (not to be confused with the scandal), and walked down to the shores of Loch Ness. I dipped my toe in the water, and it was really cold!

Here are a few final pictures before the crowds from the tour busses got to be a little much.

We headed south, towards Fort Augustus (we thought it was Fort William), but overshot it by about 45 minutes. So, after asking for directions, we headed back to Fort Augustus. We commented on the tourists in the area, and I even saw the sign for boat cruises, but thought we were in the wrong town. 😐

However, we found fantastic parking and were able to get on the next boat, which was about 10 minutes later.   They had Nessie stickers on the windows, which cracked me up!

We were able to eat lunch next to the lochs and watch boats travel through them. It was a pretty fun time, and definitely a relaxing time!

After Fort Augustus, we were able to get pointed in the right direction and set out for Oban. It is such interesting countryside!  In this area, it kind of feels like driving around Alaska. The Highlands really are beautiful!

As we drove in to Oban, it was fun to watch some of the ships sail in to the harbor. It reminded me to breathe and appreciate the beauty around me.  (As well as fresh fish and chips for dinner)!

We then headed over to the Skipinnish evening up some stairs directly across from the harbor. Tonight’s group was a high school group, and they were really good!  Skipinnish is traditional music and dancing from the Highlands. I was so impressed with how they are able to keep their culture alive and thriving!  The students were amazingly talented. One of the girls played at least four instruments. It was a delightful way to cap off a good day!
