Day 10 - Malaysia (28 July 2019)

We decided we were going to go to church this morning. So, 17 of us took grabs (like ubers) to the church building.  We needed to walk down to the Methodist church to catch our grab. It was a brisk walk in the heat and humidity, but the scenery was interesting. The drive up was pleasant, and there was a lot to look at through the window. 







When we arrived, the branch president was waiting outside the locked gate of the church property. He had forgotten his keys, so he called a branch member to come unlock the gate, so we took a few pictures while
we waited. 









I’m pretty sure we at least tripled the number in the congregation. It was a delightfully spiritual meeting!  One of the members had just received the email with her mission call and she opened it with us. Such beautiful moments shared. 





As soon as we got back to the hotel, we checked out and loaded onto the bus. We were going to a mall/food court for lunch before our next activity. Tami and I decided we wanted to eat at the French boulangerie, and we were not disappointed!





















From there, we went to a performance called ‘Encore Melaka’ which told the story about Melaka. There were some captivating parts, including the opening scene with about 30 men who had drums on wheels and  kept changing their formation and rhythm. 

Another favorite part of mine was when these ladies danced on a stage with showers of water pouring down on them as they danced. It took my breath away!  

The theater has a seating section that rotates around the view of the stage. I was pretty impressed with the whole set up, that’s for sure!  We weren’t supposed to take any pictures (or spit?), so I just enjoyed it as it was unfolding. 

























From the theater, we drove around 3 1/2 hours to the resort, Avani. My phone says it’s in Selangor, which still tells me nothing, other than I know I’m still in Malaysia.





















After winding our way through these tiny streetsin the  seemingly middle of nowhere, we ended up on the resort property. Holy. Smokes!  It’s an overwater bungalow resort!!  Who hasn’t wanted to stay in an overwater bungalow?!?









After a buffet dinner, we walked down to one of their beaches for a fire show. It was fun and the performers were interactive with the audience while they played with fire!











They have golf carts that will take you from reception to where the bungalows are, or you can ride a bike or walk the 10-15 minutes yourself. The resort is shaped like a giant palm tree, and every place has a gorgeous view. 





I’m excited to stay at such a fancy resort and experience how the other half lives. 😁. It has been a delightful trip so far, and I look forward to vacationing on a beach and overwater bungalow for a few minutes!

Today felt like how I imagined Bangkok would feel. We started out by driving over to the Grand Palace. Alex and I were both wearing long capris, and we weren’t sure if they would let us into the Palace grounds without needing to buy elephant pants to cover up our legs. But we made it in without needing to buy the pants! Our guide said there are usually 10,000 Chinese tourists here a day, but we had very few people around us.   The Grand Palace is beautiful!  They have mosaic tiles covering almost every building, and the buildings seem to sparkle in the sunlight.  Everywhere you look, it’s like all the colors wash over you as you soak it all in. There was a decent amount of sun, but it was beautiful to see!  It is an interesting experience to learn a little about cultural beliefs and norms as you are walking around experiencing the things there are to see. Day 5 - Thailand (12 March 2020)

We had another calm morning as we got ready for the day. Here’s the view from our hotel window! After another good breakfast, we met Kris in the lobby for another full day of exploring. Today, we drove about an hour to Ayutthaya. This impressive city has 515 temples!  Some of them are in ruins from when Myanmar burned them, but some of them are quite spectacular! Our first stop was Wat (meaning temple) Yai Chai Mongkol. It means ‘the temple of the boat noodle.’  It was a beautiful temple area with gorgeous flowers, textures, and color everywhere you looked.  However, we needed to use the facilities, so Alex had her first experience of the squatty potty.  It’s authentic!  After we exited the bathroom, we learned that they had western toilets around the corner. Days 1, 2, and 3 - Thailand (March 8 -10, 2020)

First of all, the coronavirus showed it’s face during the last few weeks of planning time of the trip. We weren’t sure what was going to happen, but all felt good about going to Thailand. So, after a handful of flight changes, we finally got everything sorted.  Sunday morning, we finally found ourselves at the airport!  Make sure you plan on 28+ hours of travel time in order to make it all the way from Salt Lake.  The first leg of our trip was in First Class!   The second leg was in Premium Select. Between the two flights, I finally learned how the other half lives. So. Nice!  I forgot to take a picture of the second and third flights. However, Premium Select is worth the cost of the ticket.   There have been a lot less crowds at the internationals airports, with a lot smaller crowds of people.
